As anyone familiar with even the smallest snippets of Dead Space promo art would know, things don’t look good for the Ishimura, and within a matter of hours the ship is dead, and the original Dead Space game begins with a salvage crew discovering the massacre. The game kicks off with the colony of Aegis VII uncovering a mysterious marker, and after the planet goes to hell a small team works to find sanctuary in the USG Ishimura, a “planet cracker” ship responsible for the excavation of the marker. Extraction is an origins tale, and as such it takes on some awesome creative liberties within its limited timeline and range. For all those interested in an action shooter with one of the largest narrative efforts on the system, however, Extraction is a must-play. If that isn’t your cup of tea, Extraction won’t be able to convince you to love it.

Over time, they grow more creepy to highlight Isaac's deteriorating mental state. As characters die throughout the story, they go into the "whisper pool" so they can haunt Isaac from beyond the grave. In the 2023 remake, the whispers are divided by character, area, and chapter. From then on the whispers can be heard in almost every room with no active enemies, should the player stand still and wait. The first time Isaac will hear these voices is during Chapter 1, in the corridor right after obtaining the Stasis Module. Sometimes, a voice will mention the ship's systems or even call out to Isaac. Because of the low volume and the numerous voices, it is very difficult to understand what they are saying.
